The word ‘God’ derived from the Hebrew word “Elohim” means a mighty or powerful one. Thus the Bible shows that there are many gods both in heaven and on earth, and that the Creator and Owner of the Universe, by reason of His excellence over all other gods, is known as “God of gods” and “Lord of lords”. (Deut. 10:17; Psalm 82:1,6; 1 Cor. 8:5,6) He distinguished Himself from other gods by His names and titles.
He appeared to Abraham and said, “I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” (Gen. 17:1) He revealed to Moses, His name JEHOVAH and by it he (Moses) did wonders in Egypt and delivered the Israelites from bondage. (Exo. 6:3) He has other names and titles such as I AM, JEALOUS, MOST HIGH, JAH, HOLY, THE GREAT, ANCIENT OF DAYS and so on. – Exodus 3:14; 34:14; Numbers 24:16; Deuteronomy 32:4,8; Psalm 68.4; Isaiah 57:15; Jeremiah 32:18; Daniel 7: 9,13.
His name, Jehovah, in Hebrew means One who exists of Himself. He was not created neither having beginning nor end. He is “from everlasting to everlasting”. (Psalm 90:2) The heavens and the earth and all good things in them, visible and invisible, were made by him. – Genesis 1: 1- 31; Psalm 24:1; Acts 14:15.
There was a time God was alone and had not created anything. He was in an empty space, resting upon nothing like as He made the earth from and hanged it upon nothing. – Job 26:7.
The first thing God created was a spirit being known as LOGOS(Greek) or WORD(English) who later came to this earth as a human being and was called JESUS CHRIST, the Son of God. (Proverbs 8:22-30; Luke 1:35; John 1:1-2,14; Colossians 1:15; Revelation 3:14) Through the Word, Jesus Christ, God Almighty created all other things perfect. He was therefore, the creative agent of God. – John 1:1-3, 10; Ephesians 3:9; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-3.
PERSONALITY
The Bible plainly shows that Jehovah is a Spirit. (John 4:24) This does not mean that He is breeze, shapeless or that He has no form or body. He is a Spirit Person of the highest order. And because He has a spiritual body, He cannot be seen with human eyes. –Exodus 33:20; John 1:18; 5:37; 1 Corinthians 15:44,50; 1 Timothy 6:16.
That God Almighty is a person as revealed in the Holy Bible, there is no doubt. In Genesis 1:26,27, it is stated that He made man in His own image after His likeness. Since man who is his image is a person having a shape, form and body, it proves conclusively that God Himself is a person. And John the Apostle wrote, “As He (God) is so are we (men) in this world”. – 1 John 4:17 The fact is that while we are human beings, He is a Spirit Being or Person, and therefore He has no flesh, blood or bones- Luke 24:39; 1 Corinthians 15:44,50.
The Prophet Ezekiel saw God in a vision as a MAN sitting upon his throne in heaven. He said that His appearance from His waist upward and downward was as bright as fire, and that round about the throne was the colour of amber and the appearance of rainbow. (Ezekiel 1: 26-28) This is another concrete proof to show that God is a personality. The colours including those of the rainbow give the understanding that Jehovah has the same purpose for all nations or races of men regardless of colour. He is no respecter of persons (that is, not partial) but whosoever fears Him and does righteousness is accepted by Him. – Acts. 10:34,35.
Furthermore, when Stephen fell into a trance he saw in heaven, Jesus Christ “standing on the right hand of God”. (Acts 7:55,56) If God has no shape, form or body, and is not a person, how could He have right hand on which Jesus stood? What is more, the prophet Micaiah said: “I saw the LORD sitting upon His throne, and the host of heaven standing on His right hand and on His left”. (2 Chronicles 18:28) This is also a clear evidence of the personality of God. And St. “Paul stated that Jesus Christ is the “express image” of the person of God. – Hebrews 1:1-3.
According to the Bible, it is a fool who says there is no God. (Psalm 14:1) Some foolish and wicked people think or say that God has no eyes or ears and that He does not see or know the things that are happening on this earth. To such ones the Psalmist said: “Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall He not hear? He that formeth the eye, shall he not see? He that chastiseth the heathen, shall He not correct? He that teacheth man knowledge, shall not He know? The LORD knoweth the thoughts of men, that they are vain.” –Psalm 94: 8-11.
ATTRIBUTES
God has four infinite attributes which are His likeness in man though those of man have been corrected through sin. They are wisdom, power, justice and love. He manifested or showed them in different ways and at different times as revealed in the holy Scriptures. By wisdom and power He made the heavens and the earth, and all the good things in them. – Genesis 1:1; Proverbs 3:129; Jeremiah 10:12.
He showed His power when, because of the wickedness of men. He destroyed he first world with water but saved Noah whom He found righteous and his family of seven. (Genesis 7: 1-24; 2 Peter 2:5) the power of God was manifested in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah while lot and his two daughters were delivered. (Genesis 19:24-30; 2 Peter 2:6-8) He also showed His great power in the wonders Moses performed in Egypt and when He destroyed the Egyptians in the red sea but saved the Israelites. (Exodus 9:16; 15:1-3, etc) God will further show His infinite power in the punishment and destruction of Satan and all his followers (visible and invisible) at the “great tribulation” and “battle of the great day of God Almighty” now drawing near. – Psalm 83:13-18; Zephaniah 1:14-18; Matthew 24:21; Romans 9:17, 21-25; Revelation 16:13,14.
Justice was manifested when He sentenced Adam to death for breaking His law in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:17; 3: 9-12,17-19) “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) He is the God of justice. – Job 34:11, 12; Psalm 89:14.
God showed His perfect love by sending His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to this evil world to suffer and die in order to redeem mankind from sin and death. – John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:9, 10.
For man to gain peace and life he must know God and trust in Him. (Isaiah 26:3,4) Jesus said: “And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou has sent.” (John 17:3) This means that without the accurate knowledge of God the Father, and Jesus Christ the son, one cannot be saved or gain eternal life.
Wow, this is a true one and this has improved my learning on who is God
